Concrete Cloth can set underwater

concrete_cloth

Fabric of any kind can rarely be described as anything remotely awesome.  However, this concrete cloth mixes things up quite a bit.  It’s a special type of cloth with concrete built into it. At first it’s flexible and will move just like fabric.  You can drape it over a chair and it’ll fall where you want it.  However, add an extra ingredients to it and it hardens right up, just like normal concrete.

This Concrete Canvas was originally created for Concrete Canvas Shelters.  With the cloth you could build your building with only water and air for construction.  It probably has plenty of other things it could easily be used for though.  One added bonus to the cloth is that you can never use too much water, which is an issue with normal concrete.  This stuff can even set underwater.  The fabric is also fireproof and chemical resistant.  All you have to do to use it is add water and it will harden.

The Sega Mega Drive gets turned into iPod dock

megadrive-26-300x203

Old gaming consoles don’t work the greatest after being used over and over again.  Once it’s worn out beyond repair, you’re left with the decision to toss it or cling to it for some kind of a project.  Most gamers that are attached to the console would prefer to find a way to cherish the memories and keep the console around.  However, if you can’t come up with a good idea for it, it just ends up collecting dust in the closet.  Well if you own a Sega Mega Drive, here’s one idea to get some more use out of the old console.

Within the console there isn’t a whole lot to remove.  Wired managed to remove all of the unnecessary parts and install an iPod dock instead.  The dock is taped up to make sure that it fits well inside of the Sega.  Of course you wouldn’t want to do this to a Sega you would still like to use, so it’s definitely best if you find one that you no longer intend to keep on using.  You can check out more detailed pictures by going here.

Android 1.6 phones get Google Maps Navigation – free GPS app with voice guidance

What was first unveiled exclusively on the Motorola Droid is now available to the rest of the Android gang. If you’ve got an Android phone running version 1.6, you’ll be able to download the new Google Maps Navigation application for free off the Android Market from today.

Android 1.6 phones in the US currently include the currently available T-Mobile mytouch 3G, the G1 and the HTC Tattoo, as well as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. However handsets like the HTC Hero, Droid Eris, Samsung Moment and the Samsung Behold II all run Android 1.5 so won’t be getting the new feature.

While you will get features like turn by turn voice guidance and automatic rerouting, some features of Android 2.0 are not available on Android 1.6, for example, the ability to use the “navigate to” voice command. Nevertheless, if you’re an Android user with the eligible phones mentioned above in the US, you’re definitely in luck and the likes of TomTom, Garmin will no doubt be banging their heads against the wall with this news. If you’re in the UK / non-US, it looks like there could be an unofficial way to get this working on your Android phone, this will mean abit of tweaking around but watch this space.

Apple VP Defends iPhone’s App Store Approval Policy

Though indisputably successful, the iPhone’s App Store has been at the center of controversy for Apple this past year. In a rare move, the company’s vice president of marketing Phil Schiller spoke on the record to defend the App Store’s review policies.

Apple has approved over 100,000 iPhone apps to date, but some questionable rejections have brought the company under fire. Among concerned developers, Joe Hewitt, developer of the popular Facebook iPhone app, spoke loud and clear that he would no longer develop for the iPhone because he disapproved of Apple’s review process.

“I am philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process,” Hewitt told TechCrunch. “I am very concerned that they are setting a horrible precedent for other software platforms, and soon gatekeepers will start infesting the lives of every software developer.”

In an interview with BusinessWeek, Schiller (right) explains why Apple has an App Store review process. In short, he said it’s necessary to ensure iPhone customers get what they’re promised. He noted that 10 percent of app rejections are related to “inappropriate” content, while 90 percent have to do with technical fixes, such as bugs. His third main point is that the App Store has an international audience, and thus several governments and political leaders are asking the company what it’s doing to ensure children are not downloading inappropriate content.

“We’ve built a store for the most part that people can trust,” he said. “You and your family and friends can download applications from the store, and for the most part they do what you’d expect, and they get onto your phone, and you get billed appropriately, and it all just works.”

The rest of the interview is available at BusinessWeek.

What do you think? Is a gatekeeper necessary for the App Store? Vote in the poll below.
